Where does CUI live? Who touches it? What systems store it, process it, or transmit it, and can you show the boundary on a diagram that matches reality? If the room hesitates here, the rest of the day inherits that hesitation. A crisp scope answer does the opposite: it tells the assessor they are dealing with a program, not a binder.
Evidence has a smell
Assessors read hundreds of artifacts a year, and they can tell fresh ink from lived process at a glance. A policy dated last Tuesday that nobody in the room has read. Access reviews that all happened the same afternoon. Logs that begin, suspiciously, six weeks ago. None of it is disqualifying by itself, but each one invites a deeper pull, and deeper pulls are where night-before programs come apart.
What good looks like in hour one
A scoping diagram you drew months ago and have corrected twice since, because reality changed and you noticed. A System Security Plan whose authors are in the room and can speak to their own sections without reading them. Evidence folders organized by control family, populated continuously, with dates that scatter naturally across the year. And one person clearly running the meeting from your side, because assessors notice when a program has an owner.

Once a quarter, walk your own first hour. Pull the diagram, ask the scope questions out loud, spot-check five controls’ evidence for freshness. It takes ninety minutes and it converts assessment day from a performance into a tour. The shops that do this do not just pass; they finish early.
